Sam Winchester was twelve years old when he was kidnapped by demons. He knew nothing of the supernatural realm, for Dean had tried to protect him from that for as long as possible. The older Winchester wanted his little brother to have a somewhat normal, peaceful childhood...but that was not meant to be.
It was a warm, summer evening, and Sam volunteered to go and buy some ice cream. Dean was hesitant to let him go, but the 12 year old insisted.
"Don't worry about me, Dean, I'll be right back."
Dean relented, and Sam left. He never returned home.
Sam was kept alive by the demons, but lived in constant fear and suffering; the young Winchester's misery was their revenge. However, after several months, he somehow escaped them at last, finding himself in a large, unfamiliar city, and many miles away from home. He had to find his way back to Dean and warn him about the monsters, he had to tell Dean that he was safe, that he was okay...he had to escape the demons, too, once they found out he was missing. Sam was running from everything at once, seeking safety that he knew he could only find once he was with his brother again.
